Reading ‘The First Sense: A Philosophical Study of Human Touch’ by Matthew Fulkerson.
Touch is aligned with bodily awareness & exploratory action
A complex form of awareness – more like a multisensory form of sensory awareness than a single sensory modality
Exploratory action in touch – similar to figure/ground relations in vision (and in phenomenology in general) (63)
If “Perception and perceptual consciousness are types of thoughtful, knowledgeable activity,” as Fulkerson quotes Noë, we must consider research methods that engage perception through exploratory action. To be content with language based and/or visual methods is limiting the possibilities of research, especially in the social sciences and the humanities. Exploratory action is a primary source, and a valuable asset. (72)
